Dubai Municipality highlighted its innovative sustainable infrastructure initiatives at the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX), organised by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Held from 1 to 3 October 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, WETEX is the region’s premier event focused on sustainability and clean energy technologies.
Dubai Municipality’s participation demonstrated its dedication to building a sustainable future through the use of advanced technologies. The Municipality presented several projects aimed at improving sewage and recycled water management, operating treatment plants, waste-to-energy solutions, and assessing energy consumption efficiency. These initiatives align with Dubai's broader vision of adopting cutting-edge technologies that ensure the sustainability of natural resources, optimise energy use, reduce carbon emissions, and move towards climate neutrality.
His Excellency Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, stated: "Dubai Municipality is committed to driving sustainable development by implementing innovative infrastructure solutions that address both current and future environmental challenges. Our participation at WETEX 2024 highlights the strategic projects that are shaping Dubai’s pioneering and sustainable future, from enhancing rainwater management to protecting our marine environment. Through initiatives like the Tasreef project, we are not only safeguarding our natural resources but also reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global leader in sustainability and resilience."
Tasreef Project
One of the key highlights of Dubai Municipality’s exhibit is the AED 30 billion Tasreef project, designed to enhance Dubai’s rainwater drainage network. This groundbreaking initiative will increase the Emirate's rainwater drainage capacity by 700%, ensuring Dubai is well-prepared to meet climate challenges for the next century. Upon completion, the project will boost the city's stormwater drainage capacity to 65 millimeters per day, making it the largest integrated system of its kind in the region.
The project aims to reduce operational costs by utilising best practices and sustainable technologies. It underscores Dubai Municipality’s unwavering commitment to developing infrastructure that addresses both present and future environmental challenges, ensuring the safety and well-being of all Dubai residents.
Additional Cutting-Edge Technologies
In addition to the Tasreef project, Dubai Municipality showcased several other groundbreaking initiatives, including:
Smart Scraper
A remote-controlled device designed to collect marine debris from Dubai Creek. This eco-friendly technology is crucial in protecting the marine environment and strengthening Dubai’s sustainability efforts.
Green Buildings and Digital Twin Project
This initiative leverages Dubai’s geospatial digital twin to create advanced simulation systems that assess the environmental impact of buildings. The project examines how applying the Saffat Green Building System standards, including thermal insulation, reduces emissions. By providing accurate geospatial data, the initiative optimises insulation studies, reducing energy consumption in both new and existing buildings. The advanced simulations allow for in-depth geospatial analysis, promoting improved energy efficiency. This project supports Dubai’s digital twin, advancing sustainable urban planning and aligning the smart building sector with global climate neutrality goals.
Health and Safety Week
Alongside its participation in WETEX, Dubai Municipality is also involved in ‘Health and Safety Week’, where it is showcasing the latest health and safety technologies and practices. These efforts aim to raise awareness of key international health and safety standards across both residential and workplace environments.
By participating in WETEX 2024, Dubai Municipality reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development through the adoption of innovative solutions that balance rapid urban growth with environmental stewardship. The Municipality’s emphasis on creating resilient infrastructure, promoting renewable energy, and driving climate action reflects its strategic goal of contributing to Dubai’s vision of becoming a global leader in sustainability.
